How much does an answering service cost in Dallas?
Most answering services bill by the minute or by the call, so the price moves with your volume. Here is what the big names actually charge, and what flat monthly pricing looks like next to them.
3 test calls at times you pick. One-page report. No card.
When a shop owner asks what an answering service costs, the honest answer is that it depends on how they bill. There are three common models, and they produce very different monthly totals for the same shop.
What the big services charge
Prices below are from each company's own published pricing. They change, so check the source before you decide.
| Service | Base price | How they bill |
|---|---|---|
| Ruby | $250/mo | 50 minutes included, then $3.30 to $5.40 per minute |
| Smith.ai | $300/mo | 30 calls included, then per-call overage |
| AnswerAmerica | $1.47 per answered call | No monthly fee, pay per call |
| PATLive | $99/mo | 50 minutes included, then $1.69 to $2.99 per minute |
| Abby | $165/mo | 50 minutes included; 500 minutes is $1,380/mo |
| Jobber AI Receptionist | $29/mo add-on | Only for shops on Jobber; books into the Jobber calendar; emergency calls transfer to one contact |
| Jobholler | $85/mo | The caller's details arrive by email after the call |
| DFW Phone Desk | $149/mo flat | No meter, no per-minute math |
Do the math for your call volume
Per-minute and per-call pricing rewards low volume and punishes busy months. Take AnswerAmerica at $1.47 per answered call. At 50 calls a month, that is $73.50, which is cheaper than any flat plan. At 150 calls, it is $220.50. The breakeven against a $149 flat plan sits around 102 calls a month.
With Ruby, the meter runs faster. Fifty minutes are included, but a single long Saturday of emergency calls can burn through the plan. Every minute past the limit bills at $3.30 to $5.40. A 10-minute call past the limit can cost more than $50 by itself.
Flat pricing is not always the cheapest option. What it buys is predictability. Your busiest month costs the same as your slowest, and you never do per-minute math on an invoice.
Questions to ask before you sign
Whatever service you compare, ask each one the same four questions so you are comparing the same thing.
Does it bill by the minute, by the call, or by the month?
This is the question that decides your real cost. A low base price with per-minute overage can cost more than a higher flat price once your volume is real. Ask what a 100-call month and a 200-call month would each cost, in writing.
Do nights and weekends cost extra?
Some services charge a premium for after-hours coverage, which is exactly when a shop owner needs them most. Ask whether the quoted price covers the hours you actually miss calls, or only business hours.
Is there a setup fee or a contract?
Setup fees and annual contracts lock you in before you know whether the service works for your callers. DFW Phone Desk has no setup fee and no contract. You can cancel any time.
What happens to calls past the plan limit?
On metered plans, calls past the limit either bill at overage rates or go unanswered. Ask which one. An answering service that stops answering during your busiest week is not doing its job. DFW Phone Desk has no plan limit, and because nothing is metered, spam and robocalls are never counted or billed.
