Answered, then escalated.
An after-hours emergency caller does not leave a voicemail. They call the next shop that answers. Phone Desk answers the call, takes the message, and escalates the urgent ones until a person confirms.
3 test calls at times you pick. One-page report. No card.
For a caller with water coming through the ceiling at 9pm:
Voice: Thanks for calling [shop]. This is an automated assistant. How can I help?
Caller: I have water coming through my ceiling.
Voice: I understand. May I have your name and the best number to reach you?
Caller: [Name], [number].
Voice: Thank you. I have your name and number, and I have marked this urgent. The shop's on-call tech is being paged now.
Then: the on-call tech is paged, then the backup, then the owner, until a person confirms.
Words in brackets are confirmed with the shop before launch.
Paged in 10 minutes, or the month is free.
When a customer calls after hours with an urgent problem, the engine pages the on-call tech, then the backup, then the owner, until someone confirms they will take the job. If the first page goes out more than 10 minutes after the urgent call, that month is free, up to one free month per customer per year.
How an urgent call moves
An urgent call is not a message to pick up in the morning. It is a customer deciding whether to wait or to call the next shop. The escalation sequence pages people, not voicemail boxes, in this order:
The call is answered and marked urgent.
The on-call tech is called first.
If the tech does not answer, the backup is called.
If the backup does not answer, the owner is called.
A person confirms they are headed there.
The sequence continues until a person confirms. The customer is told help is on the way, and the owner sees what action was taken.
Urgent calls are paged until a person confirms
Phone Desk pages the on-call tech, then the backup, then the owner, and keeps paging until a person confirms that they are taking the call. For routine calls, the desk takes a message and texts the shop the caller's name, number, and reason for calling. The desk does not book jobs onto a calendar and does not dispatch trucks. Its role is to keep contacting the shop's designated people about an urgent call until one of them confirms.
What the voice does on a call
- It answers and identifies itself as an automated assistant for the shop.
- It captures the caller's name, phone number, and reason for calling.
- The shop gets a text with these details after each call.
- It does not book jobs, quote prices, or access the shop's systems.
- For owner-run shops in Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Irving, Arlington, Frisco, McKinney, Garland, and Grand Prairie.
Free missed-call check
You pick times
Choose 3 times from a short list (for example a weekday at lunch, a weekday 30 minutes after closing, and a Saturday morning).
We call
We place 3 test calls to the main line. If someone answers, we say right away that this is the test call you asked for. We never pose as a customer.
You get the report
Within 1 business day of the third call, a one-page note: time of each call, rings before pickup, and voicemail details if unanswered.
- No card and no login for the check.
- We call only at the times you pick.
- The one-page report is yours either way.
No recordings and no follow-up calls. If you do not pick times, we do not call.
Or start with a 7-night paid pilot: $49
For a one-time $49, DFW Phone Desk answers your after-hours calls for 7 nights, and you get a short report each morning on what came in. When a call is urgent, we take the caller's details and page your on-call tech.
If an urgent call during the pilot is not paged within 10 minutes, the $49 is refunded.
If you start Phone Desk after the pilot, the full $49 comes off your first month. Phone Desk is $69 a month for your first 3 months, then $149 a month, so the pilot makes the first month $20. If you do not start, nothing further is charged, and the morning reports are yours to keep.

Price
"Flat $149. No meter. Your best month costs the same as your slowest."
$69 a month for your first 3 months, then $149 a month. Flat monthly pricing, with no per-minute or per-call charges. Every big answering service bills by the minute or by the call. Ruby's overage runs $3.30 to $5.40 per minute across its plans, and Smith.ai averages $7 to $10 per included call. Ours never moves with call volume. And the free check is proof first: you hold a one-page report on your own line before you pay anything.
Spam and robocalls never cost you anything. Some after-hours calls are junk, and some now come from automated callers rather than people. Because the price is flat, none of them are counted or billed. A month of real emergencies and a month full of robocalls cost the same flat monthly price.
$149/month flat
DFW Phone Desk answers the calls you miss for $69/month for your first 3 months for signups through January 31, 2027, then $149/month.
How we compare
What the big answering services charge, from their own published prices:
| Service | Price | How they bill |
|---|---|---|
| Ruby | $250/mo | 50 minutes, then $5.40/min overage |
| Smith.ai | $300/mo | 30 calls, then $8.50 to $11.50/call overage |
| AnswerAmerica | $1.47/call | Per call, no monthly fee |
| PATLive | $99/mo | 50 minutes, then per-minute overage |
| Abby | $165/mo | 50 minutes included; 500 minutes is $1,380/mo |
| Jobber AI Receptionist | $29/mo add-on | Only for shops on Jobber; emergency calls transfer to one contact |
| Jobholler | $85/mo | The caller's details arrive by email after the call |
| DFW Phone Desk | $149/mo flat | No meter, no per-minute math |
Prices from each company's published pricing, checked October 2026.
Flat is not always cheaper. At AnswerAmerica's $1.47 per answered call, 50 calls cost $73.50. Our $149 flat costs less once you pass about 102 calls in a month. What flat buys you is predictable spending: your busiest month costs the same as your slowest.
Questions owners ask
What does an answering service cost in Dallas?
DFW Phone Desk answers the calls you miss for $69/month for your first 3 months for signups through January 31, 2027, then $149/month. When you compare it with other services, ask each one the same four questions: does it bill by the minute, by the call or by the month; do nights and weekends cost extra; is there a setup fee; and what happens to calls past a plan limit. Then you are comparing the same thing.
How does the free missed-call check work?
After you say yes in writing, we place 3 test calls to your main line at times you pick from a short list. If someone answers, we say right away that this is the test call you asked for. Within 1 business day of the third call, you get a one-page note with the time of each call, whether it was answered and how many rings before pickup, and, if it went to voicemail, whether the greeting was your own, whether it gave hours or another number, and whether the box took a message. No recordings and no follow-up calls.
What does the AI do on a call?
It answers and identifies itself as an automated assistant for your shop. It captures the caller's name, phone number, and reason for calling. You get a text with these details after each call. It does not book jobs, quote prices, or access your systems.
What does paged mean, and what counts as urgent?
Paged means the first page to the on-call tech goes out within 10 minutes of the urgent call. Urgent means the caller says the problem cannot wait until morning, including active flooding, a gas smell, sparking or burning electrical, no heat in freezing weather, and sewage backing up. If the caller says it is an emergency, it counts, and it is not reclassified away.
Do I keep my own phone number?
Yes. Your number stays yours, and we set up the call forwarding with you. The desk only answers the calls you miss.
